Completed: May 9, 2018: Assessing and Treating Problem Gambling with Individuals Experiencing PTSD. This six-hour training will educate counselor practitioners on the stress reaction to trauma. It presents recent empirical evidence on the prevalence of PTSD found on Gamblers in treatment. It will explain the importance of performing a comprehensive assessment and the selection of appropriate treatment modality. Presenter: Paula Sanchez, Ph.D.

Completed: May 10, 2018: Compassion & Self-Compassion in the Treatment and Recovery of Problem and Disordered Gambling. It goes without saying that there are many underlying causes of addictions. In every situation, however, no matter what the causes are, compassion and self-compassion can aid in the treatment and recovery process in several ways. Whether it be in the form of motivation, the development and/or rebuilding of relationships, or forgiveness, the importance of compassion and self-compassion cannot be overlooked. This workshop will explore how vital it is to foster these skills in the treatment and recovery of gambling disorder. Presenter: Glenn Osowski, NCGC-II, CPSS

May 30, 2018: Gambling Disorder: Women. Most people who suffer from gambling related issues slowly lose control of how much time and money they spend engaging in the activity. This inability to stick to limits can lead to financial issues, as well as a host of other problems. Many times, as the problem intensifies, other areas of the person’s life will be negatively impacted, including families, work and community. In many situations, the person who is directly impacted is a woman. The impact of problem gambling on women can be devastating. While traditionally seen as a problem that primarily impacts males, research suggests growing numbers of women who experience problems related to gambling.  This training will focus on the participation of women in various types of gambling, how they are impacted, and most importantly, vital considerations in the approach of treatment for this population. Presenter: Nancy Milliron, MS, CAC, CCMS, LPC

May 31, 2018: Drugs, Alcohol, and Mental Health: Where and How Does Gambling Fit? The growing trend of research aimed at exploring the issues related to problem gambling has raised many questions in its association to drugs, alcohol, and mental health.  This training is aimed at identifying the interconnectedness of problem gambling to addiction and mental health within clinical practice. Strategies for managing treatment barriers and best practice will be shared and discussed. Also, with the DSM-5 reclassification of Gambling Disorder, it has created clinical opportunities in the treatment of addiction. The new diagnostic criteria of Gambling Disorders, as well as its relationship to clinical practice will also be discussed. Presenter: Victor Ortiz, MSW, LADC I, CADC II
