This series consists of Days 5-8 of the eight day (60 Hour) clinical trainings which are specific to gambling counselor certification. While this is designed as a series, you are not required to register for all four days. The instructor for all four programs is Gregory A. Krausz, MA, CACD, LPC.

Day 5 – Using Motivational Interviewing to Address Gambling Disorder
Miller and Rollnick define Motivational Interviewing in the following way: "Motivational interviewing is a directive, client-centered counseling style for eliciting behavior change by helping clients to explore and resolve ambivalence." Motivational Interviewing/Enhancement therapy is an evidence-based approach to counseling for many client identified concerns including problem gambling. More and more evidence through research regarding the efficacy of MI in the treatment of gamblers is being completed. During this training, theory, practice and techniques of Motivational Interviewing/Enhancement therapy as applied to gamblers will be discussed and practiced through discussion, case studies, and one-on-one practice exercises.

Day 6 – Using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to Address Gambling Disorder
Cognitive behavioral therapy is an evidenced based counseling practice that has been identified as effective in the treatment of Gambling Disorder. Individuals with gambling disorders develop beliefs and thoughts that support and influence the continuation of gambling behavior. Cognitive behavioral therapy addresses these cognitive distortions. This training will focus on identifying cognitive distortions, triggers, and other thoughts that influence gambling behavior as well as cognitive behavioral techniques to address problem gambling. Through use of case studies, practice exercises, and interactive discussion the application of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to gambling disorders will be developed.

Day 7 – Gambling Disorder: Ethical and Treatment Considerations
As with all clients working with those with gambling disorder presents many unique and challenging decisions to make to provide the most ethical care. Issues of countertransference and transference, and self deception/deception lead to potential ethical considerations for the counselor to address with themselves, colleagues and clients. The importance of boundaries and ethics as applied to gambling disorder will be the focus of this session.

Day 8 – Advanced Biopsychosocial-Spiritual Treatment Design
Treatment for gambling use disorder is as complex as the individuals who develop the disorder. The importance of treating the whole person from a cultural, biological, social, and spiritual perspective can not be ignored. Having gained information on gambling, those impacted by gambling, and the unique aspects of treatment of gambling disorder integrating, connecting, and applying these concepts to program design will be a focus. The importance of spirituality, relapse prevention, biology, and cultural strengths in recovery will be covered in their application to gambling disorder. Building upon the previous days of training, Day 8 will allow attendees to work together to design treatment plans, using a variety of approaches, based on these complexities.

If you have attended our trainings before, you may be familiar with the parking lot across 3rd Street from the Northampton Community College (NCC) Fowler Southside Center. This parking lot is now under construction. Free parking is available on either side of the Fowler Center on the north side of 3rd Street, as well as on 2nd Street to the north of the building, as usual. On the morning of your training, please allow a few extra minutes to find parking.
Fee: None, and a continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.
Credits (7.5 per day): CAC, APA, and NCGC from IGCCB, NASW-PA and LVPCA. Payment for credits will be collected the day of the workshop; cash or check will be accepted. (Cost of 7.5 credits: LVPCA members, $30; LVPCA non-members $35; NASW members $15, non-members, $25)
Lehigh Valley Psychological and Counseling Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LVPCA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
NASW-PA Chapter is a co-sponsor of this workshop. 7.5 CEs will be awarded for completion of this course. NASW has been designated as a pre-approved provider of professional continuing education for social workers (Section 47.36), Marriage and Family Therapist (Section 48.36) and Professional Counselors (Section 49.36) by the PA State Board of Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists and Professional Counselors.
