Stigma is an issue that is often talked about and often misunderstood in the impact it has on individuals, groups, and society as a whole. Large of amounts of research have been done on stigma as it relates to mental illness, substance use, and gambling. Stigma often leads to individuals feeling more isolated and less likely to seek help. Gambling activities and gamblers have long been stigmatized impacting the access to care for gamblers and their families. We will be seeking to discuss stigma, how it impacts gamblers and their families, and how we as professionals can help provide hope and relief from stigma by identifying resources and recovery capital for individuals, families, and groups.
